Seven-times Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher will come out of retirement to race for Mercedes next year, BBC Sport understands.

The German, who will be 41 on 3 January, has signed a contract and the deal will be announced imminently.

Schumacher will partner compatriot Nico Rosberg in the team that won the drivers' and constructors' titles in 2009 in its former guise as Brawn.

His spokeswoman Sabine Kehm said she could not make any comment.

Schumacher's decision will reunite him with Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn, who masterminded all seven of his titles, the first two with Benetton in 1994-5 and the subsequent five with Ferrari from 2000-4.

The German newspaper Bild is reporting that Schumacher signed a one-year deal at the team's offices in Brackley and it is likely he will have the option to continue beyond 2010 if his returns goes well.

Mercedes are known to want German rising star Sebastian Vettel in the long term, but the 22-year-old is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2012.

Schumacher was forced to call off a planned temporary comeback as a stand-in for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa last season because of a neck injury sustained in a motorcycle accident last February.

But Schumacher is known to have had medical checks recently and it must be assumed he has been given the all clear as he would not want to face the same embarrassment again.

He signed a revised contract as a consultant for Ferrari, but he told Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo that he was "very close" to concluding a deal to race for Mercedes.

Ferrari have had to release him from his contract to enable him to race for Mercedes.

His comeback is the most high profile in F1 since Austrian Niki Lauda came out of a two-year retirement for the 1982 season to race for McLaren.

Lewis Hamilton and Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger have ended their relationship after two years.

McLaren's 2008 Formula 1 world champion, who turned 25 last week, and the American singer, 31, announced the split in a joint statement.

"Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton can confirm that they have decided to go their separate ways," it read.

"The two of them have decided to focus fully on their careers and will remain close friends."

Hamilton and Scherzinger began dating after meeting at the MTV Europe Awards in Munich in November 2007.

A year later, Scherzinger was at Hamilton's side as he celebrated the Formula 1 world title at the final race of the 2008 season in Brazil.

The Hawaii-born singer, who shot to fame after joining the Pussycat Dolls in 2003, has been a familiar face in the F1 paddock and was there to share in Hamilton's wins in Hungary and Singapore last season.

However, there was speculation at the Italian Grand Prix in September that the high-profile couple were close to separating because of Hamilton's reluctance to settle down.

Despite managing the challenges of a long distance relationship between his home in Switzerland and her base in Los Angeles, Hamilton insisted they were still together.

The new McLaren pairing of Hamilton and reigning world champion Jenson Button, with their respective girlfriends Sherzinger and Button's partner, Japanese model Jessica Michibata, had been expected to be the focus of the media spotlight in 2010.

Following his split, Hamilton is intent on focusing on winning back the drivers' crown from his British rival.

Heikki Kovalainen crash cuts short Lotus Jerez testing

Heikki Kovalainen crashes his Lotus
Kovalainen ended up in the tyre wall on his first run for Lotus F1

Lotus have been forced to abandon the second day of the third winter test in Jerez after Heikki Kovalainen knocked the front wing off their 2010 car.

The former McLaren driver slid off into the gravel and damaged the front wing as the wet weather continued in Spain.

Lotus technical director Mike Gascoyne said a new front wing would not arrive until the early hours of Friday.

It was Kovalainen's first run in the Lotus F1, who are taking part in their first test since rejoining the grid.

The Finn had completed around 30 laps for Lotus before his off and was bottom of the timesheets with a best of one minute, 33.554 seconds, five seconds off the pace of Williams' leader Rubens Barrichello.

You can't help a mistake, especially in such difficult weather conditions, everyone makes them.

Kovalainen said on his Twitter page: "Had a crash and damaged front wing, session over for us. My mistake. Friday we go again."

Gascoyne added on his Twitter page: "Slight off for Heikki. Knocked off the front wing. Spare on its way, but will not be here until 2am, so no more running.

"Starting to put the car back together. If we had a spare front wing would be out again today but have to wait until tomorrow."

The Malaysian-owned Lotus F1 team had a productive first day in Jerez on Wednesday with reserve driver Fairuz Fauzy completing over 70 laps, even though his best time was more than nine seconds off the pace.

But with Kovalainen behind the wheel on Thursday, there were echoes of last week's Jerez test when fellow newcomers Virgin Racing also suffered a front wing failure seven days ago.

Timo Glock had only done three short runs before the wing fell off and the car was not able to get on track until late afternoon the following day as the team also had to wait for spare parts to arrive.

The penultimate winter test has been dogged by wet weather and the rain continued to fall on Thursday, leaving teams unable to test the raw pace of their cars.

Ferrari, who had Felipe Massa at the wheel, said they were concentrating on race procedures such as pit-stops and driving under safety-car conditions.

"It's still not time to develop new solutions," the team said on their website. "For those who didn't have the possibility to drive on a dry track yet this bad weather might turn into a real problem."

Barrichello, who with 98 laps clocked the most mileage, topped the timesheets with 1:27.145 ahead of Renault rookie Vitaly Petrov, Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg's Mercedes.

"Generally, the feeling with the car is good," said Vettel, who hands the car over to team-mate Mark Webber for the remaining two days.

"The weather has been pretty bad over the last couple of days. It seems that Spain is not so happy to have us here.

"Nevertheless, we have still got some important work done and the car has been reliable."

The first race clashes with ManYoo this weekend  angry

It'll be interesting to see how Button and Schumacher react when Hamilton shows them who's boss.

Watching Alonso celebrate at the end like he'd saved the world when he'd only won because Vettel had a problem was just downright embarrassing.

Lol

The first of many (every) races Lewis will outpace the equal car! It was a zzzZZ race.. I don't know why they took KERS out - probs because Lewis was ace at it and they don't want him dominating ala Schumacher.. They'd much prefer some Ferrari 1bn budget processions. The motor racing fans must surely now see Lewis as the saviour of the sport, noone else is good enough to even challenge Ferrari.
